Spun Silk Yarn

Introduction
Spun silk is a yarn of natural protein fiber. Spun silk has compact structure, evenness, clean appearance, elegant luster, good moisture-absorbing capability, good strength and elongation, and fine and soft fiber. It is useful for weaving high-class spun silk products which can be used as daily-use articles and decorations。

Sources of spun silk
There are several sources of spun silk:

1.Pierced cocoons, the result of breeding moths that have emerged from their cocoons;

2.Double cocoons or doupion, which result when two cocoons have been spun too closely together;

3.Floss, brushed from cocoons before reeling;

4.Friese, the coarse and uneven silk fibre at the beginning and end of each cocoon;

5.Scrap, the machine waste left over from reeling.

Manufacturing process of spun silk
The spun silk manufacturing processes are as follows:

Spun silk manufacturing process

The weak filament of the transparent silken envelope remaining from the reeling process, and the damaged, discoloured, or imperfectly shaped cocoons become the raw material for lustrous, creamy coloured spun silk yarn. This cocoon "waste" must first have the sericin removed (degummed) with soap and water. Next, the fibre is cut into uniform lengths and carded to remove short tangled bits as well as the brown pupa inside the cocoons. Combing lays all the fibres parallel in a sliver which is spun into a shimmering yarn. Spun silk is the most familiar yarn made available to handworkers.

Characteristic
Spun silk is less expensive than reeled silk. Although spun silk has less strength and elasticity than reeled silk because of the shorter staple used, it possesses all the general characteristics of reeled silk. Tub silk fabric, for example, is made of spun silk, yet it is highly effective when the quality of the fibre is good. Spun silk is used for shantung, pile fabrics, dress trimmings and linings, elastic webbing, sewing silk, summer weight silks, velvets, umbrella fabrics and insulation.
